22 Oct 2019 NAPLES DAILY NEWS: Some new places opening in Collier owe their origins to immigrants including new sushi, grilled cheese restaurants
The end of Hispanic Heritage Month this past week reminded me of how diversity in Collier County comes in so many rich flavors — one of the reasons I love it here.
It’s illustrated in the growing number of minority businesses. Since my return to Southwest Florida, I’ve noticed how many of the new merchants opening storefronts are immigrants or have minority backgrounds.
The most recent numbers from the U.S. Census seem to back that up even as an increasing number of immigrants are saying they’re feeling less welcome by some leaders and their flock in the United States. The data suggests minority-owned businesses are significantly fueling new economic growth in Southwest Florida. At the same time, the Census showed no growth in the total number of non-minority businesses in Collier and Lee counties.
